Keeping Eyes Healthy

SSB Logo

Regular eye exams are the best tool in maintaining healthy eyes. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the recommended frequency of eye exams depends on your age, medical background, and risk factors for disease. Generally, adults require a comprehensive exam by an ophthalmologist:

  • At least once between the ages of 20 and 39
  • Age 40 to 64, every two to four years
  • Age 65 and older, every one to two years

Some factors may put you at increased risk for disease. If any of these apply to you, check with your ophthalmologist to see how often you should have an eye exam:

  • Personal or family history of eye disease
  • African-American heritage (African-Americans are at increased risk for glaucoma)
  • Previous serious eye injury
  • Certain diseases that affect the whole body (such as diabetes)

Other tips to help preserve eye health include:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a balanced, nutrient-rich diet
  • Protect your eyes from the sun
  • Quit smoking
  • Guard your eyes from injury
