Learning About Vision Resources

SSB Logo

There are many ways to get information about vision resources. These resources can connect you to people, information and services that can promote your independence and self-confidence.

Minnesota State Government Resources

Minnesota state government includes one agency and two councils that work to meet the needs of Minnesota’s blind and visually impaired citizens.

  • State Services for the Blind
State Services for the Blind (SSB) offers rehabilitation and other services for the blind and visually impaired. Any person who has a vision loss that creates a barrier to their personal or vocational independence is eligible for this service. SSB’s staff will give you accurate information about blindness and visual impairment. You'll receive the information you need to make good decisions on personal goals and services. Visit State Services for the Blind to find out more about the programs and resources available.

  • Minnesota Statewide Independent Living Council
The Independent Living Council promotes independent living for people with disabilities, including consumer control, peer support, self-help and advocacy. This governor-appointed council is a joint effort between Minnesota Rehabilitation Services and Services for the Blind, and serves as an advisory board for both programs and Minnesota’s eight Centers for Independent Living.

  • Minnesota Rehabilitation Council for the Blind
The Rehabilitation Council advises state leadership about programs of State Services for the Blind. A majority of the Council’s membership is blind or visually impaired.

Advocacy Groups

Advocacy groups are groups of citizens who share a common interest and direction. Advocacy groups often have memberships and publications. Minnesota has three main groups that are of and for the blind. To learn more, contact the group directly.
